Ramblings From a "Different" Point of View

I love my family.  Really I do.  With all the crazy ups and downs, laughter filled dinners, cold stoney after-fight silences, hugs and rough-housing, raucous cheering at sport events, and quite admiration at award ceremonies.

But they don't always get me.  And after years of feeling so out of place, black sheepish, anger at myself, I've arrived at a place in my life where I can say with confidence that my family may not always get me, but I'm okay with that.  I'm not ashamed to be me because I am different.

And that's what I think my mother has come to accept in my too.

I've been childless for the past month as The Growing Boy has been down in Fl visiting the bevy of aunts and uncles.  I know he's been having a blast and missing me at the same time.  I can't wait to pick him up later this week.  I've missed him so much more than I ever could have imagined.

I was filled with much trepidation and anxiety last month, waiting for my mother to show up for a week long visit before she would fly back to Fl with The Growing Boy.  I was half prepared to drink or Xanax myself to sleep every night, frustrated and exhausted from her disapproval and judgement.

But something happened on the third night she was here.  We stayed up until 3AM talking about everything under the sun.  Mental Illness.  Child rearing.  Diet.  Love of food.  Life decisions.  Relationships.  And it finally clicked for the both of us when we started talking about defiance.

One of my younger sisters is going through a difficult time right now.  She feels lonely and friendless, out of place and angry, mixed up with adolescent emotions and dreams of her future.  My mother said to me that my little sister was "defiant."

I challenged her to look at my sister as different, rather than defiant.  Mom countered that she thinks I'm defiant because I have blue hair and that I hold onto the silly idea that I should be loved for my individuality, when in reality life would be a lot easier for me if I did more to fit in with the mainstream, rather than fight it.

When she said that, a bulb went off in my head.  Everything I've read about every wonderful, crazy, intelligent, emotionally wounded, talented person came to mind.  And I realized that I fit there, too.

"I don't see myself as defiant.  I'm just different.  To me defiant is the Russian rock band Pussy Riot that climbed up on the alter of an Orthodox Church for an impromptu performance, calling for the ousting of Putin."

I continued, "Look at all the lovely works of art that have been created over the ages.  The music played, the stories written.  All that came from artists.  Artists who were considered weird, who didn't fit in with society.  And some of them were kinda bastards that no one wanted to hang out with.  Sometimes with one side of their brain being open to such creativity, their social side was crap.  Michelangelo was not a really fun person to hang out with.  But out of his differentness, came amazing beauty.  Look at Van Gogh.  That man was a tortured, mentally-ill nut case.  He died penniless, yet The Starry Night, painted from his asylum window is one of the most recognizable works."

So as we continued to talk, late into the early morning hours, my mother got to know me a bit better.  And I got to know my place in the world a bit better.

And I'm so happy.  Happy knowing that the imagination I have, the dancing in the aisles of Wegman's, the bursting laughter, the blue hair, that's all me.  I am different from the next door neighbor.  Not the same mother as the mom from karate class.  And as I work hard to raise a wonderful, scary intelligent, Tourette tickish, loving and lovable little boy, I can take pleasure that my differentness, my weirdness, my individuality is a strength.  Not a defect.

(Side note, I am a firm believer in hate-free, freedom of speech, and public protest, but storming the alter at a church whether it be Catholic, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or Buddhist is just wrong.  Wrong time, wrong place, wrong audience.  If you are going for shock value, you aren't going to convince your enemies that you argue is valid.  If anything, it will solidify your opponents believe that you are a total douche bag.)

5 Minutes

One friend I made through Band Back Together is Jana.  She lost her son her Charlie on the 24th day of his life, due to Late Onset Group B Strep.  Her story is heartbreaking and powerful.  She is a wonderful woman with strength I wish I had.

Each Sunday she poses a challenge to herself and others to free write for 5 minutes straight.  No filter, just whatever happens as your fingers dance across the keyboard.

I realized today, after the enormity of some news I've gotten, that I need to write through this confusion and pain every day.  Even if it is only five minutes.

Off to set the kitchen timer.

300 Seconds Inside My Brain
I think the bbq I ate for lunch was bad.  My stomach is rolling.

Maybe it's because of the news Jeremiah's shrink gave me the other day.  My son has Tourette Syndrome and GAD aka Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

WTF.

I'm still reelling. I knew things weren't going right back in November, so I started getting help for him.  I knew in the back of my head that he had issues, but when the doctor said these out loud it made it all the more real.

If one person asks me if my son curses uncontrollably i will PUNCH THEM IN THEIR STUPID FACE.

Will I get jail time for that?

I can't think straight.  I'm going a little crazy today.  Yesterday was terrible for him.  He stayed with a friend who was also watching two other kids.  They were girls.  Horrible, obnoxious, brats from the outer rings of Hell.  I think they could annoy Satan.

He was great while he was there, but the moment he got home, all hell broke loose for him.  All the pent up rage and frustration boiled over.  He punched his dummy.  He laid down on the bed and kicked.  Screamed into his pillow.  Threaten to punch himself in the head.

Go The F*ck To Sleep: The Play

Scene:
Living Room-- Mother and Son prepare to read a bed time story.  Mother is feeling very proud and slightly superior at this moment for she is ENGAGING Son's imagination and EXPANDING his vocabulary and IMPARTING wisdom.  (Large action words indicates that Mother is envisioning the day that when Son accepts Nobel Humanitarian World Record Prize for his works in the field of Neuro-Literature-Artology, he will recall this evening.)

7:15--Aesop's Fables read

7:30--Son tucked into bed, nightly orisons occur.

7:35--Mother begins work plays on Pintrest; Son announces from top of the stairs that he has to clip a hangnail.

7:37--Son pronounces that all toe nails and several finger nails need to be clipped.  Mother makes mental note to sweep bathroom floor as it is now littered.

7:45--Son bounces down the stairs, pleads for Mother to re-tuck him into bed.  Mother pauses video of duck skate-boarding to act in a maternal fashion.

8:05--Mother hears footsteps overhead.  Sighing, she stops looking at food porn and addresses Son.  He inquires as to her nightly routine, as he is unable to sleep without knowing when she will be finished "working" on the computer.

8:07--Son is re-re-tucked into bed.  Mother wonders if any new articles on Cracked have been published since she was on at 5pm.

8:20--Son stomps downstairs, tears trailing down his face.  He is "sooooooooooooo hot!"  And "has a little bit of a headache, especially when I shake my head like this."  Son imitates wet dog shaking self dry.

8:30--Mother updates Facebook status with a sideways frowny face, informs sister that the new family dog will be named Sherlocka as 'Chelsea' is a stupid name.

8:33--Mother realizes there is nothing to drink in the house which would give her a buzz, so she makes a cup of herbal tea.  House Mate makes pointless inquiry about Son not sleeping.  Mother wishes to roll eyes but refrains by digging her nails into her leg.

8:47--Mother, no longer dreaming that Son will live to see the an award winning future, much less next day, ascends stairs to threaten child with bodily harm if he rises from bed again. Son is re-re-re-tucked into bed.

10:22--Mother finally feels she has earned the right to relax.

Son has gone the fuck to sleep.

Right In The Feelers

Over the past 24 hours I have been bombarded with so many messages of love and support that I can't process everything.  I can't believe so many people have reached out to me with words of comfort.

A friend messaged me, cautioning that I might have some triggers or flashback pop up because of Lord Douche Bag's comment, which I initially brushed off.  But around lunch time I was getting upset because I realized the sheer enormity of awfulness of what he said.

I am so thankful to each and everyone of you who have offered to take care of LDB, however I won't take up your offers for vengeance.  The most fitting punishment is that he has to live with himself, a worm-eaten, rotten, hollow shell of his former self.

I can't write anything more, because I'll cry.  Mostly tears of gratitude.  So I'll leave you with this to laugh at.  I hope my little brother will forgive me for posting this.

Why

I stopped writing a while back and it's taken me a good long while to figure out just why.  It's not that I didn't have anything to talk about.  Plenty has happened since April when I dropped off the radar: friends got married, I got a job, moved four states away, my friend died, babies died.  A lot has gone on.

Yet I have not written, which is one thing my shrink said I must do if I want to keep working on the things that dwell in my head.

I finally know why I stopped writing.  It's because I got scared.  I let the ugly voices convince me that if I were to write about the things that run around inside my head that it would scare everyone off.  I have grown convinced that if I lay bare the sad, angry, happy, silly, mixed-upness that is me that I will never find anyone who wants to be close to me.

Not to long ago, a friend announced that she was getting a divorce and that really upset me.  She battles with mental health demons and I know that must have been a stress point in her marriage.  My bizarre little brain tells me that even though I'm not involved with anyone, if in the future I do have a counterpart, he'll probably realize I am a bag of crazy and not want to deal with me in the long run.  Basically I've spent months being upset about a scenario that doesn't exist in this dimension.  I've been paralyzed about a future that is not there.

I know it doesn't help that the baggage that I still haul around occasionally falls off the luggage carousel and I have to re-pack the contents before I close them again.  I hate being reminded that my son's father left me because he was too weak.  I hate that his family packed me up on an auto train and shipped me away.  I hate all things that were said to me, implying that I was not fit to be a mother.

I hate that when my fiancee dumped me at the alter, claiming that I was not trustworthy and would probably have an affair, still angers me.  He came from a broken family, which saddens my heart.  He had problems that he was unable to see, but I still loved that foolish boy.  I know that I would not make the same mistakes and get involved with someone so damaged, but I am still afraid of trusting someone again.

Like a child that hides under the blankets to avoid the scary monsters in the closet, I am afraid that if I poke my head above the covers I will discover there is no one who wants to be near me.  That I'm the crazy monster in the closet.

My Sacrifice

I have been trying to talk myself out of a panic attack since last night. So far, I've kept the crazy feelings down, but they are fighting to get to the surface.  I hate putting this down in binary code, because to me, I sound like a pathetic broken record.  I hate that I just can't "get over it" (as I've been told to do) some of the residual anger that festers in my soul.  I hate that after 6.5 years I still long to be back up in VA, not the state that I was raised in, but the state where I 'grew up.'

I know I am sick and run down from taking care of The Kiddo. I probably have walking pneumonia if not my chronic sinusitis acting up.  I***know***that in a day or two I should be doing better.  I'll have been seen by a doctor and hopefully given something I help me kick this illness to the curb.  I just ***feel***like crying.

I am excited about going to VA in 87 days (but who is counting) yet terrified of the feelings I am going to have to deal with. I miss living up there so much. I had to give it up when I had my son. It has been such a sacrifice.

One one hand, my family is here, we are surrounded by a great group of people from our Church, and the Kiddo is getting a great education. He's lacking for nothing.  I do not regret choosing the life of my son over my desires.  I love him so much and know that his life is responsible on so many levels for me getting my life together.

But I am so alone down here. There isn't anyone I know down here that I can talk to, that has SOME of the same interests as I do. I stick out like a sore thumb. I'm not going to apologize and hide who I am like I've done before, but I'm just so tired of doing it alone.  In this area, if you aren't a good ole' country gal or a pretentious country club groupie/doctor chaser, than that's it.  This town, cute and quaint as it may be, isn't big in diversity.

One of my cousins said I should move to Asheville because there are so many artists. I'd probably feel right at home, though what I gather from Portlandia, I'd be happy there too.

I'm so tired of being lonely.

I'm still angry that my son's father cowed under the pressure we faced.  That his parents paid for me go away, but wouldn't help me when I was sick.  We weren't together when I conceived.  I had realized that our relationship as a couple was a toxic combo.  But we had been friends for years before we had ever become involved.  I'm so pissed that he couldn't stand on his own two feet and ran to his parents like a baby.  I'm so angry that I had to give up living in a place for me that felt like home.

I'm so tired of carrying this anger and hurt around.  I hate that I hate living where I am.  I hate that I'm not happy here. I hate knowing that I would hate myself  if I took The Kiddo away from the only life he's know just to satisfy my selfish desires.

The Kiddo Does Dr. Seuss

My darling little Kiddo wanted to read "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" for his Aunt Kathy, who is far off in VA. I have to share; memories like this are too precious not to share.

Here Comes The Sun--From Miami to Fort DeSoto

<When I question my sanity (which is often) I take solace in remembering that as long as I can realize I'm being a nut, I'm not a complete nut.  I might be a disorganized serial writer at times, but comforting words from kind friends can renew my spirits rather well.>

On a lighter note, I've got some of my pics from recent trip to Miami while my frister Kathy was in town.  (Frister is my term for friend/almost sister).

A Day in the Life of the Kiddo

Conversation in the Diatribest household

"Momma, you are the bestest thing that has ever happened in my life."

"Thank you, Baby-Man"

"I'm all done with my shower."

"Okay, get dressed.  The laundry isn't dry yet, so you don't have an underwear.  Just put on your pj bottoms."

"I DON'T HAVE ANY CLEAN UNDERWEAR!

AGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

WORST DAY EVER!"

Haiku You Too or Random Stuff That I Think Of

I'm picking up writing for Associated Content again.  I got assigned a haiku the other day, which is the only piece of poetry that I can write.  The 5,7,5 rule rocks. I'll be haikuing everyday for them.  At 1 centavo per 100 clicks I should be making 2 cents everyday!
*************************************************************************
Last week after I stopped crying, pulled my head out of the pillows, and got back to work, the first thing I decided to do was to get back to work.  Because nothing more says "I should tackle the 3 weeks of work I left unattended while I dealt with dead grandmother stuff," then re-arraigning the furniture in three rooms.  If I could just remember that I decided this impromptu reorganization at night.  So far my midnight trips to the loo have involved several bruises and a near encounter with a door frame.  But I digress.
*************************************************************************
My sarcastic mouth is going to be biting me in the butt soon.  The Kiddo heads of the Kindergarten next month and I can just imagine the phone calls I'll be getting:
"Ms. Pollock, when I asked your son to stop picking his nose, he informed me he was digging for gold."*
"Ms. Pollock, when we go on field trips, please teach your son not to yell at other drivers for driving like morons."
"Your son told another student, 'I might be short, but you are ugly.' This is not an appropriate response towards bullying."
"At Wednesday Mass, when the Priest says 'The Mass has ended," he yelled "Yes!" and attempted to fist bump the child next to him.  This is not tolerable."*

(I know these things are gonna happen, because he's already said this at home.)*
I can't wait for school to start!

And Laughter Filled the Quiet Room

Laughter Isn't Always the Best Medicine in the Kiddo's Case

This week has been a bit of a down for me.

I've been struggling with writer's block, bad moods due to massive amounts of rain, and two bouts of food sickness (word to the wise: if you are eating out, never eat a salad!  Restaurant Salads = E.Coli!).

But on the up side, I made a UK DJ laugh, my honesty and openness made 2 authors cry, and I got caught in a violent rainstorm while out on a walk with the Kiddo.  I wish I could have had a camera to record that moment.

As I child I grew up playing in the rain.  If there was a rain storm and no lightning, I would be outside swimming in the neighbor's pool , bouncing on a trampoline, or walking in the gutter pretending I was Laura Ingalls Wilder playing in the creek.  When I went off to college, my love of the rain didn't abate and that hasn't changed since I hit 30.

So yesterday when the Kiddo and I were walking back from the Post Office and the rain started to pelt down and I mean REALLY nail you in the head hard, I started to laugh.  The Kiddo, on the other hand, freaked out.  He was a good two house-lengths ahead on his bike and froze in place.  By the time we got to the house, we were SOAKED!  Me still laughing, him quite hysterical.

When I got him inside and into dry clothes, he looked at me with his great big eyes and said, "I'm not having a really good day."

Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight

He's really pissed at me in this photo.

It's a good thing my Kiddo is still cute (pic is 7 months old) because when he flipped on the overhead light in my bedroom at 3AM I was ready for a fight.

My first thought was, "I'm being raided!" quickly followed by, "Wait, I don't have any open warrants nor do I live near a crack den."

The Kiddo's saving grace was saying, "I woke up and wanted to tell you I love you."

This is why I don't sleep with a gun under my pillow. . .but I would love to have one in the house.  (First, must learn how to shoot).

My X Factor- Part Duex

This week has been very trying on me.  Not that work has been exceedingly difficult or tiresome; on the contrary it's been amusing to be a Kumquat Pimp (sans the diamond topped cane) during this Fair.  I've met some really interesting people: a man who makes candles that smell like beer (For the Man Cave! as he proclaims from his booth), a man who gets to let baby kangaroos play in his apartment, and a living statue.  So being there isn't a problem.

What's been the hardest thing for me is that I've hardly seen my son at all this week.  He's been staying at my mom's house all week while I work.  I get out of the fair around 10, so by the time I were to pick him up, thus disturbing his sleep, and driving back I would have added 1 hr.  Since I can't afford the extra gas (thank you gas stations!  I almost puked when I filled up tonight and saw that the cheapest menu item was 3.32!!!) and don't want to screw up the Kiddo's sleep, I'm left trying to squeeze in a visit with him before I go back to work.

I know I shouldn't complain, seeing as  I am fortunate to have family that can watch him for me.  I just miss him a lot.  And I can't wait for the Fair to be over.

And to think that six years ago I was planning on hiring  a nanny to raise him while I was traveling for my hoity-toity contractor job.

I hate not seeing you Kiddo, but it's for the both of us that I'm doing this.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Tonight's post is a photo essay because I don't think my words would do justice to the beauty of this day.
Indian Rocks Beach

Favorite Uncle digging a trench
Notice that the sand around the Kiddo is barely touched.
I saw a picture of desert sands like this once.
My sole contribution: a pretty shell

I took a nap on the sand while listening to the crash of the waves
You can't see that I desperately need to paint my toenails.
Yes the water was cold, but frozen fingers be damned!  The boys had a blast. . .and purple lips.

Big East/Big Ten Challenge. . .Big Day

Today I'm off for a day jam packed with fun with my boys, the Kiddo and his Favorite Uncle.

First donuts at a local mom-and-pop shop.  Best. Donuts. Ever.  Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme can't hold a candle to them.  (But I'm still happy to eat their wares.)

Off to watch Seton Hall take on Michigan State at the Big East/Big Ten Challenge.  Total bonus points for me.  I found out children 17 and under are free, plus my mentor rounded up a free pass for me!

The beach will be the next stop to fly kites and play in the sand.  The water is way too cold for a swim.  And no I don't care that 70 y.o. men take the polar bear plunge each year, so I should toughen up.  I live in FL for a reason.

Play ball!

Welcome to My World Kuwait

I'm amazed and quite stunned to log in everyday to find that people from all over the world are checking in on me.  Hello Kuwait, glad to see you've made it on the map.

I've hit ever continent, save Antarctica.  Tell you what, $50 and a prominent picture of your face if you can convince some researcher in the South Pole to look me up.

I'm kinda punchy right now because I'm writing way too late and my brain turned off about 2 hours ago.  See, stupid me bought the stupid GPS and was/still are struggling to download the most recently downloaded maps.  I'm not so sure that the fact that I have a basic dial-up Net service through my wireless provider isn't helping the situation at all.  Oh well.

Taxes have been filed with a return good enough to cover my rent for the next 4 months, which comes at a great time seeing as the Plant is shutting down on Monday.  I knew this day was coming soon, but I'm still stressing.  But on the subject of stress and taxes, I have to rant for a bit on child support.

I got screwed over in child support back 5 years ago.  I petitioned the State of Florida of child support, but my ex counter-sued and as a result the State Commonwealth of Virginia took jurisdiction of the case.  Not having the mean of hiring an out of state lawyer, still being emotionally numb from being abandoned at 20 wks pregnant and coping with a newborn, I didn't have much strength to fight.  When the lawyers presented the agreement, which I felt I had no choice but to sign as I wasn't getting any advice at all,  I got stuck to agreeing that every other year the biological father gets to claim MY Kiddo as a tax dependent.

How fucked up is that?

He's never seen MY Kiddo, never asked for pictures, hell, he didn't even want to know the sex of the baby after he had skipped out on the ultrasound.

That part?  I'm over.  In fact, the Kiddo came across a few pictures of me and the biological tucked in between the child support order and last years tax returns.  I've held on to a few of the pictures over the years as I figured some day he might ask questions.  He's been hinting for a while that he understands that you need to have "a man and a woman to get married to have a baby,"as he explained.  But he gives me a questioning look like, "Okay?  Where's the other part?"

So when the Kiddo turned his attention to the photos, he asked about the man in the photos with me.  I told the Kiddo his name, but not the relationship because I didn't want to jump the gun on any questions.  When he saw the two of us dressed up for a formal dance, the Kiddo got so excited.  "YOU LOOK SO PRETTY!!!  OH MY GOSH, YOU ARE THE PRETTIEST MOM IN THE WORLD!!"  (Don't think for a moment that I didn't just eat that up.)

Then he said, "I didn't know you got married."

"I didn't."

"Was I in you tummy?"

"Not at that time."

"Did that man love you?" . . . . . . That question blew me away.

How was I supposed to answer that?  Before I had time to fumble around for the right answer, I think one of God's Messengers placed the reply on my lips.

"Yes.  He did love me; some but not enough."

The Kiddo stared at the picture again, grinned at me and said, "Well that's too bad, cuz I love you a TON!"

And that's when I was reminded, I might get screwed over every other tax year monetarily, but 'that man' has been screwed over since the day he walked out on the best thing that ever happened to me.

Day 5 of 21

Today's post about my post isn't a post of any importance, but I put it here to keep myself on track.  I did write tonight, but it is a rather personal issue that I'm not ready to discuss quite yet.  I know that at some point when I get some further clarification I'll be more than happy to write about it (in my usual sarcastic manner).

But so you aren't too disappointed that I haven't imparted my wisdom to you (yes, I am rolling my eyes), you have to watch this video first, then scroll down to find out what the Kiddo deadpanned:

"Mom, her song stinks worse than my poop."

Not the most eloquent child on the block, but may have a future in comedy.

One Ring To Bind Them All

The best Christmas gift I have ever received: a (too small) ring picked out by the Kiddo. He's be telling me for two weeks that I will love it and he didn't spoil the surprise. He told me this morning as I opened it, he knew I would love it and gave me the biggest, most exuberant hug ever. I am so blessed!
